As we settle into winter, where the nights draw longer and the temperatures plummet, there’s nothing better than curling up by the fire with a warming mug of mulled wine or going out with a group of friends for Christmas themed cocktails. Winter drinks have always played an important role in keeping peoples spirits up at this time of year, and there are some absolute classics that are still going strong.

Mulled wine or cider is a must-have at some point during the winter months, and it’s no longer just being served at the German Christmas markets either, bars, pubs and even restaurants are now serving up their own versions of this sweet and spicy hot drink. Our favourite recipe at Monin is simple to serve and delicious to drink:

Monin Spicy Mulled Wine

  • 250ml Monin Spicy Syrup
  • 750ml red wine or cider
  • 200ml Brandy or Cognac
  • 2 whole oranges – cut into wheels
  • 6 cinnamon sticks
  • 6 star anise
  • Serves 6

Gently cook all the ingredients in a pan and stir well. Pour into glasses and garnish with an orange wheel, cinnamon stick, and star anise.

Monin Brownie Alexander

If you’re looking for a cocktail that packs a little bit more of a punch, try this Monin twist on a classic Brandy Alexander:

  • 25ml Monin Brownie Syrup
  • 40ml Cognac
  • 40ml double cream

Shake the three ingredients thoroughly and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a grating of nutmeg.

Monin Pumpkin Spice Martini

The classics are great, but sometimes you want something a little bit different. Pumpkin Spice is a new flavour from Monin that is perfect for the autumn and winter months, and not just in coffees either (although a pumpkin spice latte is an absolute winner!). 

  • 15ml Monin Pumpkin Spice Syrup
  • 50ml Vodka
  • 15ml lemon juice
  • 15ml carrot juice or puree

Shake all ingredients thoroughly and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange zest and a dusting of ground cinnamon.
